Star Fox Free Update This Week Adds 4-Player Local Battles, 3 New Stages — and Star Fox Adventures Is Out Now

Nintendo is expanding Star Fox Battle Mode on Switch 2 with four-player local split-screen, team entry into online battles, and new Katina, Sector X, and Venom stages.

Star Fox Free Update This Week Adds 4-Player Local Battles, 3 New Stages — and Star Fox Adventures Is Out Now

Star Fox launched on Nintendo Switch 2 in June, and Nintendo is about to make its Battle Mode significantly more useful for groups playing around one system. The US game page lists a free update for September 29, while some official Nintendo regional pages in Asia list September 30; that difference is best treated as a regional/time-zone display issue, so your local eShop should be the final authority. The features themselves are consistent across Nintendo’s official material: local split-screen Battle Mode for up to four people on one Switch 2, the ability for that local group to form a team and enter online battles, and three new stages—Katina, Sector X, and Venom—with different objectives rather than simple visual swaps. Nintendo has also added Star Fox Adventures to the Nintendo GameCube – Nintendo Classics library for Switch 2 players with Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack. If you do not own the new Star Fox yet, there is another reason this update is easy to investigate before spending money: Nintendo currently offers a free demo containing the full tutorial and the Meteo campaign stage.

1) What is changing in Battle Mode?

Before the update, Star Fox already supports four-on-four team battles online. The free update expands the local side: Nintendo says Local Split-Screen Battle Mode will support up to four players on one Nintendo Switch 2 system. That means a group in the same room no longer needs a separate console for each person just to compete locally. Nintendo also says those local players can form a team and join online battles together. That matters because Battle Mode is built around stage-specific objectives and rules, not one generic deathmatch template. A single Switch 2 can become a practical “party hub” for the mode.

2) Katina: fight for control of a powerful laser

Katina is designed around control of a powerful laser. That immediately creates a central objective that both sides have to contest rather than simply circling the map looking for eliminations. Positioning, timing, and knowing when to push toward the objective should matter as much as raw aim. For players learning Battle Mode, Katina also makes the mode’s philosophy clear: winning can depend on controlling the space that matters, not on chasing every opponent you see.

3) Sector X: asteroids plus destructive energy waves

Nintendo describes Sector X as a stage where players destroy asteroids while avoiding destructive energy waves. The environment therefore becomes part of the fight. You are watching opponents, objectives, and hazards at the same time. In split-screen this can be especially demanding because each player has less screen space, so communicating about an incoming hazard could be genuinely useful. It is the kind of stage that rewards situational awareness rather than tunnel vision.

4) Venom: scan data, then escape the surge

Venom uses another objective structure: scan data modules before escaping a deadly surge. That creates a push-your-luck rhythm. Stay too long and the surge becomes the problem; leave too early and you may sacrifice useful progress or an opportunity to outscore the other team. The fact that Katina, Sector X, and Venom ask for different kinds of decisions makes the update more meaningful than a simple “three new maps” headline.

5) What stages are already in online Battle Mode?

Nintendo’s current Star Fox page lists Corneria, Sector Y, and Fichina as the three existing online 4v4 stages, each with different rules and objectives. The free update adds Katina, Sector X, and Venom. If you have not played Battle Mode since launch, it is worth spending a little time in the original three before the update so you understand the mode’s structure. Jumping straight into six different objective spaces can be confusing if you are still learning the basic flight and targeting flow.

6) How does four-player local play work?

Nintendo specifically calls this Local Split-Screen Battle Mode on a single Switch 2. You will still need enough compatible controllers for the number of players, and Nintendo notes that multiplayer can require additional accessories sold separately. With four views on one screen, practical setup matters: screen size, seating distance, and controller pairing are all worth sorting out before the match. The update is not asking four local players to own four Switch 2 systems; the key feature is four people sharing one console for Battle Mode.

7) What do you need for online features?

Online battles, GameChat, and other networked features require a Nintendo Switch Online membership, a Nintendo Account, and internet access, and online services are not available in every country. Nintendo also notes that some GameShare scenarios have their own restrictions: a player receiving software through GameShare can only use it during the active sharing session. The important distinction is that the software update itself is free, but using online services still follows Nintendo Switch Online membership requirements.

8) Does the campaign have co-op too?

Yes, though that is not new to this specific patch. Nintendo says the full story campaign can be played with a friend on the same system, online, or through supported GameShare scenarios. That makes the new Star Fox more than a solo campaign plus a detached versus mode. If the free Battle Mode update brings you back, the campaign co-op is also worth revisiting—especially because campaign objectives can unlock different routes and change which missions become available.

9) The campaign has branching routes, not just one straight line

Nintendo describes this Switch 2 game as a cinematic take on the Star Fox 64 story with newly voiced dialogue, an orchestral soundtrack, and a full visual overhaul. Completing certain objectives can unlock a different path through the campaign and dramatically change which missions become available. Normal is the standard difficulty, Easy offers a sturdier ship and stronger laser, and Expert can be unlocked by earning the required medals. Even if Battle Mode is your main reason to return, the campaign is built for replay and higher scores.

10) There is a free demo if you do not own Star Fox

Nintendo currently offers a free eShop demo that includes the full tutorial and the Meteo campaign stage. That is enough to answer the most important purchase question: do you actually like the flight controls, aiming, camera options, and pace? The game is exclusive to Nintendo Switch 2, and the US store lists a standard price of $49.99, although prices and promotions vary by region. If this update is what put the game on your radar, try the demo before paying.

11) Star Fox Adventures is available now in GameCube Classics

Alongside the update announcement, Nintendo added Star Fox Adventures to Nintendo GameCube – Nintendo Classics. It is a very different kind of Star Fox game: Fox teams up with Tricky and explores a dinosaur-filled world in an adventure-focused format rather than centering everything on Arwing shooting. Access requires a Nintendo Switch 2 and Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack. Nintendo also notes that GameCube Classics are reproductions of the original titles and presentation or performance can differ from the original hardware.

12) Why the timing of Star Fox Adventures makes sense

A newcomer can now see two dramatically different sides of the franchise in the same week. The new Switch 2 Star Fox is a cinematic reworking of the Star Fox 64 style, while Star Fox Adventures represents the exploration-heavy GameCube branch of the series. Adventures is not DLC for the new game and is not bundled into the free patch; it is a separate GameCube Classics title tied to the Expansion Pack membership. That distinction is useful if you only care about one of the two experiences.

13) A practical update-day plan

Before launch day, update the Switch 2 system software and leave enough free storage for the game patch. When the update becomes available in your region, confirm the software version actually downloaded. If you have friends nearby, start with one local split-screen match to verify controller pairing and screen layout. Then test Katina, Sector X, and Venom one by one so you learn each objective. If you are heading online, confirm your Switch Online membership. If you do not own the game, download the demo now so your purchase decision is based on hands-on controls, not just a patch announcement.

14) September 29 or September 30?

Nintendo’s official pages currently show a regional date difference. The US store and US Nintendo Direct recap list the free update for September 29, while some Nintendo regional pages in Asia list September 30. That does not necessarily mean two different builds; it can reflect regional release schedules or time-zone presentation. We therefore treat September 29/30 as the rollout window, with your local Nintendo eShop and game page as the final source. If the patch does not appear at the start of September 29 in your local time, that alone is not evidence of a problem.

Before you jump in

  • Update your Nintendo Switch 2 system software and leave room for the game patch.
  • Check your local eShop date because Nintendo pages show September 29 in some regions and September 30 in others.
  • Pair enough controllers if you want four-player local split-screen.
  • For online play, confirm Nintendo Switch Online and a working internet connection.
  • Try Katina, Sector X, and Venom separately so you learn each objective.
  • If you do not own the game, use the free demo with the tutorial and Meteo stage first.
  • If you have Expansion Pack, try Star Fox Adventures as a separate GameCube Classics title.
