Cross-play in EA SPORTS FC 27 sounds simple until console generations and Dual Entitlement enter the picture. PC, PlayStation and Xbox can play across platforms, but the game separates players by generation. More importantly, a PlayStation 5 owner is not automatically in the PS5 pool: if that player launches the PS4 version of FC 27, the active game version places them with the old-generation version pool. When a friend cannot join, ask which FC 27 version they launched before you ask which console they own.
Who can play with whom in FC 27?
EA's current cross-play guide splits FC into two main platform-generation groups. Current generation is PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC. Old generation is PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. The groups do not cross-match, so a PS5-version player does not enter the PS4-version pool and a Series-version player does not enter the Xbox One-version pool.
The key detail: game version matters more than the box under your TV
FC 27 Dual Entitlement lets supported PlayStation and Xbox owners access both generations within the same console family. EA's FC 27 FAQ explains matchmaking in terms of the generation version being played. A PS5 owner launching the PS4 version can therefore enter the old-generation environment; launching the PS5 version returns that player to the current-generation pool. The same logic applies on Xbox Series when choosing between Xbox One and Series versions.

Why can two PS5 owners fail to find each other?
A version mismatch is one of the first things to check. If one player launched the PS4 version and the other launched the PS5 version, owning identical hardware does not put them in the same generation pool. Check the actual installed/launched version before changing router settings, unlinking accounts or assuming the service is broken.
Can PC play with PS5 and Xbox Series?
Yes. EA currently places PC in the current-generation cross-play group alongside PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. When cross-play is enabled and the online activity supports cross-platform play, those platforms can share the same player pool.
Can PS4 play with Xbox One?
Yes. Both belong to the old-generation pool. Dual Entitlement adds a useful wrinkle: a PS5 running the PS4 version or an Xbox Series console running the Xbox One version can also participate in the corresponding old-gen version environment.
Nintendo Switch and Switch 2 stay outside the main cross-play pool
EA says Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2 do not support FC cross-play with PC, PlayStation or Xbox. Nintendo players can still use Nintendo-specific local and online multiplayer options. Switch 2 also supports GameShare in certain situations, but that does not turn it into PS5/Xbox/PC cross-play.
The Grounds has an important Switch 2 exception
The Grounds exists on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, PC and Nintendo Switch 2, but EA specifically says The Grounds cross-play supports PC and fifth-generation platforms except Nintendo Switch 2. So Switch 2 having the mode does not mean it joins the other current-gen systems in its cross-play pool.
How to turn cross-play on or off
- From the Main Menu, open EA Connect.
- Open Social settings.
- Select Cross-play, then Cross-play settings.
- Set Cross-play Enabled to Yes or No.
EA also exposes the setting through Main Menu > Customise > Online Settings > Matchmaking Options. In Ultimate Team, use Ultimate Team > Settings > Matchmaking Settings. You cannot switch cross-play on or off during a match.
What changes when you disable cross-play?
You reduce the number of platforms available to matchmaking. EA does not promise a universal wait-time difference, so avoid claims such as 'turning it off always fixes matchmaking.' Use the toggle as a controlled test if you are diagnosing a specific issue, then compare results in the same mode and time window.
Adding friends across platforms
EA Connect is EA's social layer for supported games. Open it from the main menu, locate or search for the other player through their EA identity or available platform identity, send the friend request and form a party where the mode supports it. Cross-platform friendship still cannot bypass generation rules: both players must launch compatible FC 27 versions.
Cross-play is not cross-progression
Cross-play controls who can share a match. Cross-progression controls whether your progress moves between hardware/platform versions. Playing against an Xbox user from PlayStation does not mean your Club, Career or other progress can be transferred from PlayStation to Xbox.
How cross-progression works inside PlayStation and Xbox families
EA says cross-progression is available when staying on the same platform family, with mode-specific limits. Examples include PS4 to PS5 and Xbox One to Xbox Series X|S. EA's current cross-play article specifically notes PlayStation cross-progression in Ultimate Team. It does not support moving progression from PlayStation to Xbox simply because those platforms can cross-play.
Switch to Switch 2 progression
EA's Nintendo guide states that Ultimate Team supports cross-progression between Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2. That progression does not transfer to other console families. This is a useful example of why cross-play and cross-progression must be treated separately: Nintendo can support progression within its family while remaining outside the PC/PlayStation/Xbox cross-play pool.
What Dual Entitlement changes—and what it does not
FC 27 Dual Entitlement provides a same-family upgrade path from PS4 to PS5 or Xbox One to Xbox Series X|S. It does not let you upgrade from PlayStation to Xbox. Having both versions available on newer hardware gives you a choice of generation version, but it does not remove generation matchmaking rules; the version you launch still determines the relevant environment.

- Confirm cross-play is enabled for both players.
- Check the game version, not only the console: PS4 or PS5 version? Xbox One or Series version?
- Make sure both versions belong to the same generation pool.
- If one player is on Switch/Switch 2 and the other is on PC/PlayStation/Xbox, cross-play is not supported.
- Install pending FC 27 updates on both systems.
- Confirm the correct EA Accounts are linked to the platform accounts.
- Reopen EA Connect and verify friendship/party status.
- Test in an online activity you know supports playing with friends instead of assuming every activity supports identical party behavior.
Which version should a PS5 owner launch to play with a PS4 friend?
If Dual Entitlement gives you access to the PS4 version, launch that version when you need the old-generation pool with a PS4 friend. The trade-off is that FC 27 has current-gen-only features, including The Grounds on PS5/Xbox Series/PC/Switch 2, so choosing the old-gen version for friend compatibility can also mean using a version with a different feature set.
Which generation should you choose for the 'largest pool'?
There is no official universal answer that guarantees faster matchmaking in every region, mode and time of day. Current-gen can combine PS5, Xbox Series X|S and PC with cross-play enabled; old-gen combines PS4 and Xbox One. Choose primarily around the features and friends you need rather than assuming one group is always faster.
