Defending in EA SPORTS FC 27 puts more responsibility on the player. In Competitive Gameplay, EA reduced automatic ball-winning from AI-controlled defenders and reduced AI interception reach. In return, manually controlled defenders gained faster jockey movement and greater manually triggered standing-tackle reach compared with FC 26. The practical message is simple: waiting for AI teammates to win the ball leaves FC 27's strongest defensive tools unused.
What changed in FC 27 defending?
One of FC 27's biggest Competitive Gameplay changes is reduced AI defending. EA says AI-controlled defenders no longer automatically attempt to win the ball simply because a dribbler gets close. They can still collect loose balls within reach orwin possession when an attacker runs directly into them, but their role is more about positioning and support until you take control.
EA also reduced AI interception reach. A manually controlled defender can reach farther than an AI-controlled teammate, which directly rewards switching into the passing lane instead of asking the AI to solve it.
Jockey is the foundation of one-on-one defending
Jockey lets you stay square to the ball carrier without committing early. In FC 27, manually controlled defenders have increased jockey speed compared with FC 26, helping them track quick attacking movement. The goal is not to touch the ball immediately; it is to deny the attacker a clean shooting orpassing lane until they expose possession.
Assisted vs Manual Jockey
The Jockey setting can be Assisted orManual. Assisted is the default and automatically adjusts player speed to help you stay close to opponents. Manual leaves spacing and speed entirely to you. Assisted is a sensible learning baseline; Manual offers more direct responsibility if you already control distance consistently.
When should you use a Standing Tackle?
Do not make tackle your first action. Use movement and Jockey to reach a useful angle, then tackle when the ball becomes available: a heavy touch, exposed change of direction, poor reception ora moment when the attacker moves within your defender's reach. FC 27 gives manually triggered standing tackles more reach than FC 26, but timing and positioning still decide whether that extra reach helps.
Shoulder Challenges: get side-by-side first
After Closed Beta feedback, EA clarified that Shoulder Challenges should work best when your defender gets side-by-side with the ball carrier rather than challenging from behind. Repeatedly spamming Shoulder Challenge while chasing now makes the defender stick out an arm and lose speed, so repeated input is actively worse than reaching the correct position.
Strength still matters, and the Bruiser PlayStyle adds value, but neither replaces body position and timing.
Teammate Contain: use it to build a trap, not steal the ball for you
Teammate Contain was adjusted for FC 27. The AI teammate now marks the ball carrier from a slightly longer distance than before. That reduces direct pressure from the helper and pushes you to switch to that defender when you actually want to engage. A strong use is to let one teammate shade a direction while your controlled defender protects a pass orprepares the switch.
Team Press will not save you near your own goal
EA changed Team Press after the Closed Beta. In FC 27 it has no effect while the ball is in your defensive third. The design goal is to stop Team Press from automating pressure near goal and make the user defend those dangerous situations manually.
Higher up the pitch, Team Press can still push players toward their marks. Defenders are less effective at applying that pressure than midfielders and forwards, and stepping toward marked players creates a trade-off: passes in behind can punish the space you leave. Use Team Press as a situational recovery tool, not a permanent state.
Defensive Depth: lower settings are clearer, not absolute
EA adjusted lower Defensive Depth after Beta feedback so defenders retreat sooner and hold a more conservative line, reducing space in behind. The defensive line still responds to what happens on the pitch, so low depth does not freeze your back line on the edge of the box.
Advanced vs Tactical vs Legacy Defending
Game Settings offer three defending models. Advanced Defending is the default and lets you choose tackle types through different inputs. Tactical Defending contextually selects the tackle type for you. Legacy Defending handles the tackle more automatically from a button press, but it is not available when using the Competitive preset.
Pass Block Assistance
Pass Block Assistance can be On orOff. When On, both AI-controlled and user-controlled players will attempt to intercept passes automatically in appropriate situations. When Off, you are responsible for triggering interceptions. Change one assistance variable at a time so you can tell whether the setting actually helps.
Player switching is a defensive skill
Because FC 27 rewards manual switching to the optimal defender, switching settings matter. Auto Switching has options such as air balls and loose balls, while Right Stick Switching offers Classic, Player Rotation and Adaptive behaviour, plus Player Relative orBall Relative reference choices.
The practical target is consistency. Use a switching setup whose result you can predict, then learn to select the defender covering the most dangerous space rather than automatically choosing the one nearest to the ball.
Who should you control? Do not drag a centre-back out for no reason
A useful Zaplat rule is to defend with a midfielder first when that player can delay the attack and preserve your back line. Pulling a centre-back into midfield can open a channel behind them. Switch to the centre-back when they are genuinely the defender who must engage the ball, not just because you want faster pressure.
How to defend a dribbler at the top of the box
- Switch to the defender covering the most dangerous shooting angle.
- Jockey and keep enough distance to react to the first change of direction.
- Do not tackle the first feint while the ball is still protected.
- Guide the attacker toward a narrower angle orless useful side when possible.
- Attack the ball after a heavy touch with a standing tackle.
- If they pass instead of dribble, switch quickly into the next passing lane.
How to defend a counterattack
On a counter, the first goal is often to prevent the killer pass rather than win the ball immediately. Control a player who can protect depth orblock the lane between the carrier and runner. A failed early tackle can turn a balanced break into a numerical disadvantage. Jockeying orrunning on an interception angle is often safer than charging straight at the ball.
When should you use Team Press?
- After losing the ball in the opponent's half when your shape behind the press is still safe.
- When you want to force a quick decision near the touchline.
- When the opponent is trying to build out, not when they are already inside your defensive third.
- Avoid it if the opponent has runners ready to attack the space behind your line.
- Do not rely on it to protect your box; Team Press has no effect in your defensive third.
Defensive PlayStyles and attributes
FC 27 reduces the gap between some PlayStyles and base attributes. EA increased jockey sprint acceleration for players without the Jockey PlayStyle and improved interception reach/retention for non-PlayStyle players with high Interceptions. The PlayStyles still matter, but raw attributes matter more when evaluating defenders.
Bruiser remains valuable for physical defending, especially after reaching a side-by-side position. Think in roles instead of collecting labels: pace and positioning for space, Interceptions for lanes, Strength/Bruiser for physical duels.
A sensible starting setup for learning
- Defending: Advanced if you want to learn direct tackle selection.
- Jockey: Assisted as a baseline, then test Manual once your spacing is consistent.
- Pass Block Assistance: On initially so you are not changing too many variables at once.
- Auto Switching: start with the default and only change it when you can identify the unwanted switch behaviour.
- Right Stick Switching: choose one mode such as Classic and keep it for several matches before judging it.
These are learning settings, not mandatory meta settings. The best configuration is the one that makes your own defensive actions predictable and reduces accidental behaviour.
How to practice defending without experimenting in Ranked
Use Kick-Off oravailable training/practice environments to isolate one skill at a time. Play a half where you only tackle after a heavy touch, orspend a session focusing on right-stick switching. Separating positioning from tackling makes mistakes easier to diagnose.
Common FC 27 defending mistakes
- Waiting for an AI defender to win possession automatically in Competitive Gameplay.
- Spamming Standing Tackle before closing the lane.
- Spamming Shoulder Challenge while chasing and losing speed.
- Treating Teammate Contain as a second defender who should win the ball by itself.
- Trying to use Team Press near your own goal even though it has no effect in the defensive third.
- Dragging a centre-back out before the situation requires it.
- Changing Jockey, Switching and Defending assistance settings all at once and then not knowing what caused the difference.
