How to Link Riot and Discord for League of Legends: Setup, Invites, Privacy and Fixes

League’s Discord integration is now two-way: link accounts to see mutual Discord friends in-client, send party invites, share live activity and join directly from Discord. Here is the full setup and troubleshooting guide.

How to Link Riot and Discord for League of Legends: Setup, Invites, Privacy and Fixes

League of Legends’ Discord integration is more than a Rich Presence badge. Riot’s current system creates a two-way connection: linked Discord friends can appear inside League’s social panel, Discord can show richer League activity, and party invites can move between the two apps.

What do you actually get after linking?

  • See Discord friends inside League if they also linked their Riot and Discord accounts.
  • See richer status information such as game, mode, session/party state and activity.
  • Invite Discord friends directly from League’s social panel.
  • Generate a party invite URL and share it in a Discord server or anywhere else.
  • Add mutual Discord friends as Riot friends from the League client.
  • Join a friend’s League party directly from Discord.
  • Use Discord’s Join or Ask to Join behavior depending on whether the League party is open or closed.

The key change is that this is now two-way. Riot’s older Discord connection mainly exposed Riot activity to Discord. The 2026 integration also lets Riot surface linked Discord-friend information in League.

Important: old Discord links must be relinked

Riot says previously linked accounts do not automatically get the full new integration. Because the connection model changed from one-way to two-way, Riot requires a relink for older account connections.

Method 1: link from the League client

  • Open League of Legends.
  • Open Add Friends from the social area.
  • Choose Connect Discord Account.
  • Complete the authorization prompts; Discord sign-in may be required.
  • Return to League and check the social panel for linked Discord friends.

Method 2: link from Riot Account Management

  • Sign in to Riot Account Management.
  • Scroll to Connected Accounts.
  • Select Discord.
  • Approve the connection and sign into Discord if asked.
  • Restart League/Discord if the social panel does not refresh immediately.

Method 3: start from Discord

Riot also supports starting the connection from Discord’s account/settings flow. The important rule is the same regardless of entry point: one Riot account can be linked to one Discord account at a time, and vice versa.

The one-to-one account rule

Riot explicitly says the integration is one Riot account to one Discord account. If your Discord account used to have multiple Riot accounts associated with it, you must choose one for the current two-way integration.

You can unlink and relink as many times as needed, but you cannot keep multiple Riot accounts simultaneously connected to the same Discord account under the current system.

What is the Universal Friend List?

Once linked, League’s friend list can automatically display Discord friends who also linked their Riot accounts. Riot friends who linked Discord may also show their Discord display name and status.

  • Discord-only linked friends can show Discord online/offline status, display name and whether they are playing the same game.
  • Riot friends with Discord linked can show Riot status, game/platform/region activity and Discord display name.
  • You can add Discord-only friends as Riot friends.
  • Blocking/removing someone on Riot does not automatically break the Discord friendship.
  • Unlinking Discord removes Discord-only friends from the integrated League list; some cached Discord information on Riot friends may remain until next login.

Why is one Discord friend missing from League?

Riot lists three requirements for someone to appear through the integrated friend system: they must have a Riot ID, they must be an actual Discord friend—not merely a person who shares a server with you—and they must have linked their Riot and Discord accounts.

There is a 375-friend cap

Riot says the integrated Riot friend list has a maximum capacity of 375. If you have reached that limit, you may need to remove an existing friend before adding someone new through the integration.

How party invites work

A League invite sent through Discord arrives as a Discord message with live party status. If the party still exists, Join takes you directly toward that lobby.

If the party already started a game or disbanded, the invitation expires and changes into a Launch Game option. Riot notes that Launch Game opens League if Riot Client is closed; if Riot Client is already running, the expired link may appear to do nothing.

Open party vs closed party

When a League party is open and has space, Discord can show a Join button. For a closed party, Discord may show Ask to Join instead. That sends the party owner a request they can accept or decline.

Can you invite an entire Discord channel?

Yes. Riot’s account-linking guide says Discord users can right-click a user and choose Invite to Join, and can also send a party invitation into a server channel. Party capacity still applies, so the link does not bypass League’s normal group-size limits.

Does Discord chat become League chat?

No. Riot explicitly says Discord chat is not integrated into League. The connection is for account/friend/activity/invite functionality. In-game text and voice remain Riot’s own client systems.

What information is shared with Discord?

Riot says it shares the information needed for the integration and relevant game/status context. Examples include Riot ID, Discord display name/account ID, game being played, match duration, score, party size and party status.

Riot says no other personal information is shared with Discord through this integration. This is still account linking, so players should review both Riot and Discord privacy/settings if they want to control visibility or disconnect later.

Platform and region limits

  • The current Riot support page describes Discord Account Linking as supported for League of Legends on PC and Mac.
  • Mac users need the Discord desktop client.
  • Windows users can receive invites and see updates in the Discord web app, but cannot respond to League game invites there.
  • For full Windows functionality, Riot recommends the Discord desktop client.
  • The feature is available only in locales where both Riot and Discord are supported.

Fix 1: Discord integration does not work at all

Riot’s first recommendation is simple: update Discord, then sign out and fully close Discord, League Client and Riot Client. Relaunch them so all applications can update and re-establish the connection.

If the problem persists on Windows, Riot says background “ghost” Riot Client instances can interfere. Open Task Manager, close every Riot Client process manually, then reopen Riot Client.

Fix 2: friend receives the invite but cannot join

  • Have the friend fully close and reopen Discord and Riot Client so both are current.
  • Make sure the friend has also linked Riot and Discord.
  • Check whether the party still exists; an old invitation can expire after the group starts a match or disbands.
  • Use the Discord desktop app if the friend is on Windows and is trying to respond to a game invite from the web app.

Fix 3: SmartURL crashes League or Riot Client

Riot says this can happen when too many SmartURLs are launched in a short period, including repeatedly clicking your own invite URL. Stop generating/clicking links for a moment, then try again rather than spamming new URLs.

Fix 4: the wrong Riot account is linked

Unlink from Riot Account Management under Connected Accounts using the minus button beside Discord, or remove the Riot connection from Discord settings. Then relink the correct pair. Because the system is one-to-one, you cannot keep the old Riot account connected at the same time.

What if one of the accounts is compromised?

Riot Support says it can help unlink Riot and Discord in either compromise scenario to reduce exposure. Riot can help recover the Riot account itself; if the Discord account is compromised, Discord’s own Help Center is the recovery path for that Discord account.

Setup checklist before you troubleshoot

  • Latest Discord version installed.
  • League Client and Riot Client fully restarted.
  • Correct Riot and Discord accounts linked one-to-one.
  • Old one-way connection relinked under the new system.
  • Both players linked if you expect Discord-only friend visibility.
  • Discord desktop app used for full invite behavior on Mac and recommended on Windows.
  • Friend list under the 375 integrated-friend limit.
  • Party still active when clicking Join.
