Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 is scheduled for full release on October 23, 2026, when its DMZ extraction mode is expected to launch alongside Campaign and Multiplayer. Activision's new October 5 deep dive describes Hajin as a persistent conflict zone where a successful run is not simply about enemy eliminations: you must complete objectives, collect useful supplies and leave with what you need. This field guide focuses specifically on the new DMZ information, not on which edition to purchase.
The FOB is your long-term progression hub
The Forward Operating Base (FOB) is the place to review Operators, Stash/Loadout, Orders and your gear before going back out. Successful Operations gradually unlock extra stations including 3D Printer crafting, Gunsmith customization, a rotating Vendor and the Boss Board. Store materials after extraction rather than carrying every valuable item into a second dangerous sortie.
- Check your active Operator and health status before every deployment.
- Move valuable extracted gear into Stash and prepare a purpose-built Loadout.
- Complete DMZ Orders to unlock useful station and progression benefits.
- Use the 3D Printer and Gunsmith once the required resources and recipes are actually unlocked.
Three ways to deploy into Hajin
Activision describes Story Missions, Dynamic Operations, and Free Roam as distinct deployment choices. Narrative missions push story rewards; Dynamic Ops offer XP, DMZ Cash and increasingly valuable Supply Drops when completed; Free Roam favors self-directed recon. Choosing a purpose first helps keep your team from spending all its resources chasing unplanned firefights.
- Story Missions: objectives and narrative rewards, not an open-ended farming guarantee.
- Dynamic Operations: DMZ XP, Cash and improving Supply Drop quality.
- Free Roam: explore Hajin while choosing your own level of risk.
- Reassess the objective after a squad wipe, lost equipment or a late radiation warning.
Looting and player levels 1–70
DMZ has its own player progression track from level 1 to 70. Searching lockers and supply caches, finishing Orders, tracking Dynamic Ops and extracting ingredients support both immediate gear needs and FOB upgrades. Collect armor plates, bandages and keys, but remember the After Action Report weighs Objectives, Combat and Looting rather than only a backpack full of valuables.
Threat levels are not a PvP warning system
A Hajin point of interest has an AI Threat Level ranging from Low to Extreme; noise and fighting can bring escalating reinforcements. That meter reflects the location's enemy response and does not account for hostile human Operators. A seemingly calm district is not a promise that rival players are absent. Retreat, break line of sight or use quiet equipment if an area becomes too costly.
- Low to Extreme shows AI area response, not human PvP population.
- Unsuppressed combat can escalate reinforcements; silence can lower exposure.
- A Lieutenant's carried Dog Tag can reveal your position to other Operators.
- Separate a high-risk boss attempt from a conservative gear-recovery run.
Lieutenant hunts can expose your team
Lieutenants provide substantial XP, DMZ Cash and potential keys, but their Dog Tags create a special risk: when you collect a Lieutenant's tag, its position is broadcast to other Operators on the Tac-Map. If you're already carrying valuable loot, consider leaving the tag behind; defeating the Lieutenant still offers rewards. Commanders are heavier encounters and not ideal targets for an under-equipped first squad.
Read the Tac-Map before choosing a route
The Tac-Map marks objectives, compounds, radiation, ammo/armor caches, gas stations, points of interest and danger zones. Activision's preview identifies places such as the 14th Political Prison and The Grid as hostile hotspots; threat can differ between sub-areas within a district. Coordinate using map-grid references, and decide an extraction route before entering a dangerous building.
- Use grid coordinates and pings to prevent your squad splitting in unfamiliar streets.
- Check radiation and escape routes before entering The Grid or the prison.
- Mark supply caches, gas stations and potential vehicle routes.
- Confirm an exit and a backup route rather than assuming an easy exfil.
Vehicles help, but fuel and armor are finite
Cars, boats and aircraft enable different ways across Hajin, but vehicles have limited fuel and armor. Gas Stations can repair and refuel them. Treat a vehicle as a route option, not a free escape guarantee: a noisy trip through a high-threat hub may draw attention, while a quiet detour on foot may be safer for a team with precious loot.
What the After Action Report measures
The post-run After Action Report covers collected resources, rating, DMZ Cash, XP and player-level progress. Activision describes ratings from F to S++ based on Objectives, Combat and Looting. Use it to diagnose weak runs: a high kill count with no completed Orders may progress differently from a coordinated extraction. It is a performance summary, not a guarantee of S-tier rewards.
A low-regret plan for your first deployment
For a first attempt, select one Order, equip a sensible Loadout, gather basic protection, then route around an unnecessary Critical/Extreme area. Look for mission objectives and useful items, not every fight. Set a point to regroup and an exfil plan early; check the radiation/time indicator. If a Lieutenant hunt turns into a human-player beacon, your initial plan should adapt rather than forcing a heroic last stand.
- Pick one achievable DMZ Order and prepare basic plates, bandages and ammunition.
- Loot efficiently and complete a Dynamic Op only when the squad can defend the drop.
- Avoid an optional Commander encounter if protection, resources or time are low.
- Extract before the escalating threat and radiation undo a useful deployment.
