PUBG Update 43.1 changes what entering water means. On the surface, players can now use sidearms and throwables under specific restrictions, swimming and diving speed is 25% faster, and boats are tougher and repairable on the surface with an All-in-One Repair Kit. Water is still a disadvantageous combat space, but it is now a real route decision inside the PUBG world on Zaplat instead of a near-total surrender of options.
1. What you can do on the surface
The official notes say sidearms and items equipped in the third slot can be used on the water surface. Sidearms support hip-fire and ADS, while shoulder firing is unavailable. You can swim slowly while aiming.
2. The restrictions define the mechanic
Bullet spread is higher than on land, and moving or diving automatically stows the weapon before it is drawn again on the surface. This makes surface fire a limited response option, not a replacement for normal gunfights.
3. Throwables can break an exit trap
Throwables are available on the surface using overhand throws only. That creates a new answer when an opponent is holding your shoreline: force movement or deny a small area before committing to the exit.
4. Faster swimming changes route math
PUBG increased swimming and diving movement speed by 25%. Some crossings that were previously too slow become more plausible, especially when the land route is watched, but open water still exposes timing and exit problems.
5. Choose the exit before the entry
Do not jump in and improvise the landing later. Pick a shore with a rock, ridge, building or other immediate cover. Reaching open ground after a long swim can erase every advantage the route created.
6. Use diving to break vision, not as the entire route
Diving removes your limited surface response options. Use it to cross a dangerous visual window or break tracking, then surface when information and defensive tools matter again.
7. Boats are stronger but louder
Update 43.1 increases boat durability and standardizes firearm damage so boats take 50% damage from firearms. That makes boat rotations more resilient, but engine sound and a predictable path can reveal your move from far away.
8. Repair changes resource value
An All-in-One Repair Kit can repair boats on the surface. A damaged boat is therefore not always disposable, but repair timing still matters. Stopping in open fire simply because repair exists is a bad trade.
9. Three phases of a water route
- ENTER: choose a point that limits enemy angles.
- SURFACE: alternate diving, movement and limited weapon use based on the threat.
- EXIT: reach planned cover, not merely the nearest land.
10. When water is worth considering
- The land route is watched or congested.
- You know a protected exit on the opposite side.
- Blue Zone or terrain makes the direct route worse.
- The squad can commit together instead of splitting without a reason.
11. When to avoid it
If the far bank is completely open, the enemy owns strong elevation, or zone timing leaves no room for a controlled crossing, the new tools do not solve the structural problem. More options are not immunity.
Practice idea
- Test one water route in a low-stakes match.
- Mark the exit before entering.
- Compare surface movement, diving and limited armed response.
- Afterward ask whether water improved your position or only delayed the same fight.
