Apex Legends Cross-Play Test Runs to November 3: US-West Matchmaking and Opt-Out

Respawn's October 7–November 3 US-West cross-play experiment aims to improve queues and skill matching. Learn the console opt-out steps and what has not been proven.

Apex Legends Cross-Play Test Runs to November 3: US-West Matchmaking and Opt-Out

Respawn is running a regional Apex Legends matchmaking experiment from October 7 until the season ends November 3, 2026. Cross-play is being enabled as the default in US-West matchmaking, with console players able to opt out. The stated goal is to shorten queues while keeping opponents closer in skill. Those are the studio's hypotheses, not verified outcomes, so it is worth knowing exactly where the test applies and what changing the setting actually does.

What changed on October 7?

The studio's October 6 note announced a test starting at around 10 a.m. Pacific Time on October 7, enabling cross-play by default for the affected US-West matchmaking population. It is a temporary regional experiment rather than confirmation of a worldwide permanent rule or a new game mode.

What problem is Respawn trying to solve?

Matchmaking balances how quickly it can fill a lobby with how closely opponents are matched in skill. A broader eligible population could help with both, which is why Respawn wants to test default cross-play. The announcement does not establish that queues are already shorter or that close-skill lobbies are guaranteed.

Does this affect Europe or Turkey?

The newly announced pilot is described as US-West only. That is a server-region scope, not proof of a rollout to Europe, Turkey or every player worldwide. Your account's country alone is not enough to tell whether you are in the affected matchmaking pool; check your selected data center, and don't switch to a distant server merely for the experiment if it worsens latency.

Will console players always face PC opponents?

Cross-play can open matching among different platforms, but nothing in the October 6 note establishes that every individual console lobby must contain PC players. Nor does it announce the removal of all other matchmaking constraints. Treat specific claims about input distribution, controller aim assist or ranked fairness as unverified unless Respawn documents them.

How to switch cross-play off on console

On PlayStation, Xbox or Nintendo Switch 2, enter the Apex lobby, open the bottom-right gear icon (Game Menu), select Settings, scroll to Cross Platform Play and choose Disabled. The same EA Help instructions show how to re-enable it later by selecting Enabled.

Why turning it off can lengthen queues

EA's support guidance warns that opting out matches you only against people using the same platform who have also opted out. That leaves a smaller player pool and can increase waiting times. EA explicitly advises against disabling cross-play if fast matchmaking matters to you; there is no universal measured delay in the current announcement.

Disabling cross-play can shrink the available matchmaking pool and sometimes lengthen queue times, depending on region, time and population. The two queues and hourglass are conceptual, not a timing guarantee.

What about PC and cross-progression?

EA states that PC players cannot disable cross-play through this setting. If the switch is missing on your computer, that is expected behavior rather than evidence of a broken account. Cross-play determines who can play together; cross-progression separately refers to sharing account progression across supported platforms.

How does this fit earlier matchmaking tests?

Respawn's June 2026 developer deep dive listed queue delays, large skill gaps, solo versus premade imbalance and teammate quality as competing concerns. A regional pilot lets the team compare data with other regions. The outcome of this October experiment needs its own measurements; earlier successful tests do not prove this one works.

Two bug fixes in the same update

The October 6 post also reports a fix for missing collision geometry at Terraformer on Broken Moon, which let players clip through the ground, and a fix for Gibraltar's skydive-emote audio continuing after landing. These are shipped fixes, not speculative matchmaking benefits. A separate October 2 note fixed settings resetting on launch for some Steam users.

What players should do

  • Check your data-center region before assuming the US-West test affects you.
  • Leave cross-play enabled if quick matchmaking is more important than platform separation.
  • On console, use Settings → Cross Platform Play if you want to test opting out.
  • Watch for Respawn's post-test data instead of treating its goals as results.
