The September 2026 update for EA SPORTS FC Mobile 27 introduced Game Plans, combining a Formation with a Mentality in a selectable preset. Rather than staying with a static lineup when the match changes, you can set up more defensive or attacking shapes and activate them in supported matches. This is the mobile game, not the PC and console FC 27 tactics interface.
The detailed September 22 EA guide confirms support in Division Rivals Head-to-Head (H2H) and certain PvE games with your own Ultimate Team, but not VS Attack (VSA) or Manager Mode. It also contains inconsistent slot wording: an introduction claims up to five plans per squad, but the instructions say you can create up to four per lineup. This guide reports both instead of turning a possible default-plus-extra explanation into established fact.
What Game Plans really change
A Game Plan binds the team's Formation and Mentality so both can change when you choose a preset during a match. It is more than a basic attacking versus defensive toggle.
- Save Formation and Mentality per individual lineup.
- Switch during H2H with the top-right dropdown.
- Five levels affect width, pressing and defensive baseline.
- Not available in VSA or Manager Mode.
- EA's four-versus-five plan slots need an in-game check.
These instructions apply to FC Mobile 27, not to the F1–F9 shortcuts or other control settings in FC 27 for PC and consoles.
Build presets from Club
EA instructs players to open My Team > Club > Game Plans, tap the + icon, choose Mentality and Formation, and press Confirm.
Create plans before a match and inspect the saved result. If you skip confirmation, a menu choice may not be available from the in-match selector.
The four-versus-five discrepancy
The official introduction states players can have up to five Game Plans per squad while the creation walkthrough says they may create up to four per lineup.
The difference might involve an initial default plan, but EA's text does not explicitly settle the total. Verify the number of usable slots in your own live game rather than promising a fixed extra custom slot.
Five mentalities, not just three
- Ultra Defensive
- Defensive
- Balanced
- Attacking
- Ultra Attacking
The named levels are Ultra Defensive, Defensive, Balanced, Attacking and Ultra Attacking. They collectively change pressing, defensive height, width and forward runs.
More aggressive does not simply mean stronger: it increases pressure and options in possession but can leave your defense vulnerable to turnovers.
Ultra Defensive against sustained pressure
Ultra Defensive drops the line deepest, keeps the side narrow and commits very few runners to attacks.
EA also cautions that isolated forwards and inviting pressure can make counters difficult and give away crosses, corners and long-range attempts. It is a trade-off, not a shield against goals.
Defensive for protecting a lead
Defensive plays deeper and more compact than Balanced with fewer runs forward and a restrained build-up.
Protecting shape matters, but you may struggle to move upfield. If the ball comes straight back after every clearance, a shift toward Balanced can restore passing options.
Balanced as a reference point
Balanced aims for the middle ground of line height, attacking movement and width. Player position and Work Rate remain influential.
Start here against an unknown opponent to identify what needs changing. It is versatile, not an officially guaranteed best choice for every squad.
Attacking for controlled pressure
Attacking positions the defense higher, spreads the team wider and encourages forward movement.
If the opponent can break behind the fullbacks, those benefits create counterattack exposure. Test whether your chosen Formation still protects the dangerous lane.
Ultra Attacking for a late goal
Ultra Attacking pushes highest and widest and supplies the most forward runners and aggressive press.
EA warns of large spaces in behind, offside risk, counterattacks and quicker stamina loss. Choose it when urgency justifies the risk, rather than playing a whole match on autopilot.
What Team Width and line height do
EA's FC Mobile 27 update identifies Team Width, Attacking Runs and Defensive Baseline as core tactical levers, while the deep dive explains Pressing.
An Attacking mentality raises the defensive line and adds forward runs; a Defensive setting narrows and deepens the team. This changes behavior, not Player Item OVR or club currency.
Player position and Work Rate still count
The actual runs made also depend on each player's Position and Work Rate within the selected Formation.
Do not assume every footballer will surge forward identically. Inspect midfield coverage and who stays behind before blaming the preset when your shape differs from another team's.
Switching formations takes field time
During eligible gameplay, activate a saved plan from the top-right dropdown. The selection applies immediately.
But EA clarifies that players need time to travel into their new positions. Switching during an immediate counterattack does not teleport your defenders into a new shape.
H2H and certain own-team PvE matches
The system works in Division Rivals H2H and certain PvE fixtures in which you control your own Ultimate Team.
Not every offline-looking or AI event qualifies, and preset-team matches are excluded. The mode's actual permissions matter more than a generic 'PvE' label.
VSA and Manager are not supported
EA explicitly excludes VS Attack and Manager Mode from this particular mid-match Game Plans interface.
Separate tactical options elsewhere in Manager Mode are not proof that this feature is available there. There is no documented hidden override.
Each lineup needs its own plan setup
The official FAQ says Game Plans must be configured for each lineup individually, so selecting a different lineup may leave you without the presets saved for the previous one.
Before reporting a missing-game-plan bug, return to Club with the active lineup and verify that both its formation and mentality were saved.
Choose a plan at meaningful moments
EA suggests Balanced for flexibility, Attacking when you need a goal and Defending when protecting the result.
For practice, compare a level first half, a narrow late lead and a late deficit. Avoid constant switching because teammates need time to settle into each new shape.
Troubleshooting absent or ineffective plans
Confirm H2H or eligible PvE support, own-team eligibility, the active lineup, the saved Confirm step and the upper-right in-match selector.
If your team still appears in the old shape immediately after switching, remember EA's warning about repositioning time before claiming the feature failed.
Sources and the separate Gauntlet mode
EA's September 22 Game Plans Deep Dive is the main source; the September 24 FC Mobile 27 Update confirms the mentalities and tactical effects.
Game Plans should not be confused with the separate Gauntlet PvE mode, where player appearances and objective stars are central. Our match scenarios are editorial advice, not guaranteed victories.
