League of Legends Refund Tokens Guide 2026: 14-Day Refunds, 90-Day Tokens and What You Can’t Return

Eligible unused League purchases can be refunded within 14 days without spending a Refund Token. Tokens extend certain refunds to 90 days. Here is what qualifies, what is excluded and when Riot Support is required.

League of Legends Refund Tokens Guide 2026: 14-Day Refunds, 90-Day Tokens and What You Can’t Return

League’s refund system has two separate paths that players often mix up: the normal refund window for eligible unused content, and Refund Tokens for purchases that are older or have already been used. The most important rule in 2026 is simple: if an eligible purchase is still unused and less than 14 days old, do not spend a Refund Token on it.

The decision rule before you refund anything

  • Eligible + unused + 14 days or less: request the refund without spending a token.
  • Eligible + unused + more than 14 but no more than 90 days: a Refund Token can be used.
  • Eligible + used + no more than 90 days: a Refund Token can be used.
  • Older than 90 days: the normal Refund Token rules no longer cover it.
  • Non-refundable category: a token does not make the purchase refundable.
  • Special-ticket item: contact Riot Support instead of assuming the client button will handle it.

What counts as unused?

Riot considers content used if you used it in a game—even a custom game or a match against bots. That distinction matters because an eligible item inside the first 14 days can be refunded without a token only while it remains unused.

What can be refunded?

Riot’s current May 19, 2026 policy lists the following categories as refundable when the relevant conditions are met:

  • Champions.
  • Emotes.
  • Individual chromas.
  • Skins.
  • Ward skins.
  • Chroma packs, with special handling.
  • Rune pages, with special handling.
  • Summoner icons, with special handling.
  • Riot ID changes if the previous name has not been taken, with special handling.
  • Unused Ancient Sparks, with special handling.

What cannot be refunded?

  • Account transfers.
  • Boosts.
  • Bundles.
  • Chests.
  • Earned content.
  • Event passes.
  • Gifts, whether sent or received.
  • Hextech inventory such as keys, chests and shards.
  • Promotional items.
  • ARAM Wardrobe.

How Refund Tokens work

  • Every League account comes with three Refund Tokens.
  • You can never hold more than three at one time.
  • If you have fewer than three, Riot gives you one new token each year.
  • Using a token consumes it permanently.
  • There is no refund for a spent Refund Token.
  • The refund returns the same amount and the same currency used for the original purchase.

What 'same amount and currency' means

If you bought a champion during a sale for RP, the refund returns the sale price in RP—not the champion’s current full price. The system is reversing what you actually spent, not recalculating the item at today’s store price.

The 14-day window: why you should save your token

For eligible unused content purchased no more than 14 days ago, Riot says a Refund Token is not required. This is the easiest place to waste a scarce token: an accidental skin or champion purchase that you have not used may qualify for the normal refund path.

The 14–90 day window

Refund Tokens expand the window. Eligible unused content purchased 14–90 days ago can be refunded with a token. Eligible content that has already been used can also be refunded with a token as long as it is still within 90 days of purchase.

What happens after 90 days?

The standard Refund Token rules do not cover content older than 90 days. Applicable consumer-protection laws can create separate legal rights, but those are not the same thing as Riot’s ordinary token system.

Special refunds that may require Player Support

Some refundable categories cannot be handled through the normal client flow. Riot’s current policy tells players to submit a support ticket for these cases.

  • Rune pages: one page per token, unless the purchase was part of a bundle.
  • Riot ID changes: refundable only if the previous name has not been taken.
  • Summoner icons.
  • Chromas: a full chroma pack costs one token to refund; an individually purchased chroma also costs one token.
  • Ancient Sparks: refundable only when unused.

Riot ID change refunds

A Riot ID change is not treated like an ordinary skin purchase. Riot lists it as a special refund that requires Support, and the old name must still be available. If another player has taken the previous name, the refund condition fails.

Ancient Sparks and Sanctum content

The current refund policy lists unused Ancient Sparks as refundable through special handling. Do not assume this means Sanctum rewards themselves are refundable: the policy distinguishes the purchasable currency from content obtained through systems that are listed separately under their own rules.

Can you refund RP for real money?

Yes, but that is a different process from refunding a skin or champion back into RP. Riot says the RP itself must be unused, the request must normally be made within 14 days of the RP purchase, and the refund goes back to the original payment method.

  • Unused RP only.
  • Normally within 14 days of purchase, unless applicable law requires otherwise.
  • Refund goes to the original payment method.
  • Prepaid cards cannot be refunded through this process.

Why your refund button may be missing

If a recent purchase should qualify but the client does not show it as refundable, Riot recommends waiting about 15–30 minutes and restarting the client. If it still does not appear, submit a ticket rather than repeatedly spending tokens or repurchasing content.

Champion update does not create a refund right

Riot explicitly says it does not refund owned content simply because a champion was updated. A rework, balance change or redesign does not create a separate refund exception outside the normal policy.

What if your account was hacked?

If an attacker made purchases or spent Refund Tokens on a compromised account, Riot says it can reverse purchases made during the compromise, including restoring spent Refund Tokens. Secure the email account, change passwords, enable two-factor authentication where possible and follow the account-recovery process.

What if a child or family member made an unauthorized purchase?

Riot asks you to contact Player Support if a minor or another family member made a purchase without your consent. Do not try to force the situation through a standard token if the real issue is an unauthorized transaction.

Do Refund Tokens reset to three every year?

No. You regain one token per year only if you currently have fewer than three, and the account cannot hold more than three. If you already have three, the annual grant does not take you to four.

Example: accidental skin purchase

You buy an eligible skin today, never use it, and immediately regret it. Because it is unused and inside 14 days, the normal refund path should be used without spending a Refund Token.

Example: skin used in one bot game

You buy an eligible skin, use it once against bots and regret it a week later. Riot considers that content used, so the no-token unused-content rule no longer applies. If the skin is still eligible and within 90 days, a Refund Token is the relevant path.

Example: 45-day-old unused champion

An eligible unused champion bought 45 days ago is outside the free 14-day window but inside the 14–90 day token window, so a Refund Token can be used.

Example: event pass or gifted skin

An event pass is listed as non-refundable, and gifts are also listed as non-refundable whether sent or received. A Refund Token does not override those category exclusions.

Pre-refund checklist

  • Check whether the category is refundable at all.
  • Check the exact purchase age.
  • Check whether you have used the content in any game, including bot/custom games.
  • If unused and within 14 days, avoid spending a token.
  • If a token is required, remember that it is permanently consumed.
  • Confirm the refund amount/currency will match what you actually paid.
  • For special-ticket categories, contact Riot Support.
  • For hacked or unauthorized purchases, use the security/support route instead of treating it as a normal refund.

Bottom line

The best way to use League’s 2026 refund system is to treat Refund Tokens as a limited exception, not the default button. Use the free 14-day route for eligible unused purchases, save tokens for eligible used content or older 14–90 day purchases, and check the exclusion list before assuming a token can fix everything. When the case involves Riot ID changes, special items, hacked accounts, family purchases or cash refunds for unused RP, Player Support is the correct path.
